On 14 October, we presented our petition to Maidstone Councilโs Cabinet meeting, calling for the ๐๐ฒ๐ฎ๐๐ต๐น๐ฎ๐ป๐ฑ๐ ๐ฆ๐ฃ๐ ๐๐ผ ๐ฏ๐ฒ ๐ฝ๐ฎ๐๐๐ฒ๐ฑ ๐๐ป๐๐ถ๐น ๐ธ๐ฒ๐ ๐ถ๐๐๐๐ฒ๐ ๐ฎ๐ฟ๐ฒ ๐ฝ๐ฟ๐ผ๐ฝ๐ฒ๐ฟ๐น๐ ๐ฎ๐ฑ๐ฑ๐ฟ๐ฒ๐๐๐ฒ๐ฑ. Over 1,500 residents signed, demanding transparency and accountability โ yet our voices have been completely dismissed.
Our petition highlighted that:
Our petition received no acknowledgment โ not from the Leader, Cllr Stuart Jeffery, nor from any Cabinet member. SOHL lodged a formal complaint, but an internal โkangaroo courtโ of council officers concluded that because the petition was ๐ญ๐ช๐ด๐ต๐ฆ๐ฅ ๐ฐ๐ฏ ๐ต๐ฉ๐ฆ ๐ข๐จ๐ฆ๐ฏ๐ฅ๐ข, it was โconsideredโ. Thatโs bureaucracy over democracy.
To make matters worse, Cabinet decided to proceed with the public consultation โ ๐๐๐ฎ๐ฟ๐๐ถ๐ป๐ด on ๐ฏ ๐ก๐ผ๐๐ฒ๐บ๐ฏ๐ฒ๐ฟ โ as if none of this mattered.
At least under the former Conservative administration, petitions were debated. We have never known a council to dismiss residentsโ voices so readily.
This is not good governance. This is not transparency.
Itโs time Maidstone Borough Council started listening to the people it serves.
